In 2018, the Alliance was established through a shared vision of improving health outcomes in the Kimberley by fundamentally changing the model of regional and remote Aboriginal health research in Australia.
Arising out of unprecedented collaboration between Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal community- controlled and government health services and research institutes, the partners aim to tackle some of the most complex health issues facing Aboriginal people living in the Kimberley.
Logo concept development
The brief: to establish a logo which represented Kimberley Aboriginal health research whilst visually functioning as a seperate entity to respective members.
The preferred logo selected by key representatives of the alliance, was the 'bubble chart' version of the logo.
Branding development
Design elements identifying KAHRA were developed with commissioned Kimberley Artist Teejay (Thomas John) Cox Worrigal
Teejay was born in Derby, Western Australia and raised on Gooniyandi country. Gooniyandi country is located in the central Kimberley region of Western Australia and includes the mighty Fitzroy River to the west and runs almost to Halls Creek in the east. Teejay was taught to paint by many elders in his family, but particularly Marjorie Cox (Yiyili) and Frank Gardiner (from Balgo and Billiluna).
"The doowoomboo (Owl) is a shy creature that’s rarely seen which is why it is so significant when our people see them. When they are seen, our people believe that they are showing themselves to give us an important message. They send us both good and bad messages that something is coming or something important is going to happen. When I was asked to do a painting for KAHRA I thought of the owl because like researchers, they play a vital role in ensuring the right messages are passed on to people at the right time and in the right way. Research done in culturally secure ways give us important information to help our communities stay strong and healthy." - Teejay.
